Daniil Medvedev reveals key to victory over Grigor Dimitrov

Daniil Medvedev said staying consistent and raising his level in the most important moments was the key to his victory over Grigor Dimitrov. In the Vienna semifinal, Medvedev dismantled Dimitrov 6-4 6-2. “It was a great match.

There were a few moments in the match where I thought I should have done just a little bit better, to go in front earlier and try to build the pressure earlier. Then I managed to stay consistent and, in the most important points, managed to raise my level.

That was enough today, and I’m really happy with my level,” Medvedev said after the match, per the ATP website.

How Medvedev defeated Dimitrov?

Medvedev made a positive start to the match, claiming the first break in the fifth game to open a 3-2 lead.

After earning the first break of the match, Medvedev also had break points in the seventh and ninth games but just didn’t convert. However, one break of serve was enough for Medvedev, who served out for the first set in the 10th game.

Through the first three games of the match, no breaks were seen as Dimitrov was 2-1 up. Then, Medvedev claimed back-to-back breaks and won five games in a row to complete a two-set win in style. Medvedev was creating lots of break point chances, while his service was untouchable as Dimitrov didn’t have a single break point during their match.

“The serve is probably the most important shot in tennis. I was lacking it a little bit this season, I was doing too many double faults. Sometimes in important moments my serve could have been a little bit better. I was working a lot with my coach to try and find this rhythm [again], and so far I’m serving good here.

I’m really happy about it and that’s also why I’m playing so good,” Medvedev explained. Medvedev plays Denis Shapovalov in the Vienna final.
