2020 US Open champion Dominic Thiem has announced that his 2022 season is over as he enters the offseason in good spirits and with the belief that he can accomplish major things in 2023. Thiem, who was out for 10 months due to a wrist injury before returning to action in late March, played his final tournament of the season at this week’s Erste Bank Open in Vienna.

Thiem, the 2019 Vienna champion, saved two match points to beat Tommy Paul in the Vienna first round, before he suffered a 6-3 6-3 loss to Daniil Medvedev in his following match. In early December, Thiem plans to compete in Saudi Arabia, at the Diriyah Tennis Cup “I will put full focus on the preparation so that I will be fully ready in early 2023.

At the beginning of December I will fly to the Emirates, do the preparations there and from there to Australia,” Thiem told Kleine Zeitung.

Thiem confident he make great results again

After losing his first seven matches of the year, Thiem started playing better and reached three ATP semifinals.

Thiem, a former top-3 player, believes he can return to his old level in 2023. “Since Bastad (this July, where he reached the quarter-finals), I have the feeling that I can compete with the best again. I have the belief that I can do it.

If not, I would give up my career. I was at the top, among the top three in the ranking. And I do have the feeling that I am capable of fighting again for the big titles, for the Slams, and to beat anyone. Otherwise, all this hard work would be meaningless to me.

I hope next year I can do it,” Thiem explained. When Thiem lost his first seven matches of the year, it wasn’t really looking well for the Austrian. But Thiem played much better in the second part of the year and it was something that he badly needed.
