Three-time Grand Slam champion Angelique Kerber has revealed that she will likely make her Grand Slam comeback at the 2023 US Open. Kerber, 34, announced pregnancy just before the start of this year’s US Open. Kerber, who will be turning 35 in January, plans to return to tennis after pregnancy.
Even though Kerber loves Wimbledon, she admits her Grand Slam return will likely come at the US Open. “I think I’ll be back at the end of the year. So rather New York than Wimbledon, but if it’s already in Wimbledon, then gladly there,” Kerber told Sport Bild.
Kerber talked to Kim Clijsters, Victoria Azarenka
Even before Kerber got pregnant, she talked to Victoria Azarenka and Kim Clijsters – who returned to tennis after giving birth. “I’ve talked about this before with Kim, who won the US Open twice as a mum, and also with Victoria Azarenka.
The topic just interested me, even though I wasn’t pregnant,” Kerber revealed. Meanwhile, Kerber last played at Wimbledon, where she suffered a third round defeat to Elise Mertens. After Kerber pulled out of Toronto and Cincinnati, tennis fans were wondering why Kerber was not playing.
Then, the German announced the happy news on Twitter. “I really wanted to play the US Open but eventually I decided that two against one just isn’t a fair competition,” Kerber wrote on Twitter. “For the next months, I will take a break from travelling the globe as a tennis player but then again, I believe it’s for the best possible reason I will miss all of you.
New York has often been a turning point in my career and it feels like this year will be no different in some way! From restarting my career in 2011 to winning the title in 2016 and becoming number one in the world. The US Open has a special place in my heart and I wish I could have said goodbye to all of you on court before not being around on tour for a while.
Being a professional athlete means everything to me but I’m grateful for the new path I’m heading to. To be honest, I’m nervous and excited at the same time. Thanks for your continued support – it means everything to me”.
