Former world No. 1 Garbine Muguruza acknowledged that it has been a challenging season for her and admitted that she has been struggling with her confidence levels throughout the season. Muguruza, who capped off the 2021 season by winning the WTA Finals, is a disappointing 12/15 in 2022.

Muguruza entered the 2022 season hoping to achieve big things, but so far her season has been a massive disappointment. “It’s been a tough season, a little bit of a roller coaster,” Muguruza admitted, per Tennishead.

“I don’t know if I’m going to be able, with these last tournaments, to have a different feeling. That’s my goal. I think that it’s all about confidence and how well you’re playing or how many matches you’ve been playing.

Definitely this year I feel that I haven’t played that many matches so obviously when the important moments come, you really feel that confidence that is not quite there yet. I think also trying and trying and trying, at some point I will get rewarded”.

Muguruza made a positive start in Tokyo

Muguruza, who is the third-seeded player in Tokyo, had a first round bye at the tournament. In the round-of-16, Muguruza overcame 213rd-ranked Despina Papamichail 6-4 6-2. Muguruza broke Papamichail in the first game of the match, but the Greek broke back immediately in the second game.

After blowing an early first set break, Muguruza broke Papamichail again in the fifth game to open a 3-2 lead. Then, Muguruza held on to her serve the rest of the first set to claim the opener. After winning the first set, Muguruza started the second set with back-to-back breaks and a very comfortable 4-0 lead.

Down by a set and two breaks, there was no coming back for Papamichail as Muguruza held on to her serve the rest of the match to complete a two-set win. Muguruza plays next either Liudmila Samsonova or Wang Xinyu.
