Daniil Medvedev had a huge chance to become back-to-back Major champion at the Australian Open. The Russian wasted a massive 6-2, 7-6, 3-2, 40-0 advantage against Rafael Nadal and fell in five sets to lose ground and confidence.

Daniil has won only one small title this year, hoping to raise his level in the remaining events and secure a place at the ATP Finals. The Russian failed to grab points in Metz, losing to world no. 284 Stan Wawrinka in the second round.

Stan scored a 6-4, 6-7, 6-3 victory in two hours and 20 minutes for his first top-10 triumph since the end of 2020. The Swiss wasted a match point in the second set tie break and bounced back in the third to topple former world no.

1 and advance into the quarter-final. Daniil lost his temper in the third set’s third game after getting broken, mocking the crowd in Metz and sending them to Stan’s side even stronger. The Russian fired nine aces and 12 double faults, struggling on the second serve and losing the match in that area.

Stan saved two out of four break points and grabbed four return games from 11 opportunities.

Stan Wawrinka defeated Daniil Medvedev for the second time in Metz.

Medvedev fended off a break point in the opener’s fifth game with a booming serve.

Wawrinka served well in the rest of the set and kept the pressure on the other side. Daniil led 40-15 in game seven before dropping four straight points and losing serve after spraying a forehand error. Stan held at love with a service winner in game ten for 6-4 in 37 minutes.

Medvedev broke in the second set’s second game following Wawrinka’s volley error to gain a boost. Still, the Swiss pulled it back in the next one to erase the deficit. The servers were too strong in the remaining nine games, dropping only seven points and heading into a tie break.

The Russian forged a 4-1 advantage before the Swiss climbed back to 5-5. Medvedev sprayed a forehand error in the 11th point to face a match point. Wawrinka squandered it with a backhand mistake and kept the rival alive. Stan saved a set point at 6-7 with a service winner before Daniil converted the second at 8-7 to introduce a decider and improve his chances.

Starting all over, the Swiss broke in the third set’s second game, and the Russian lost his coolness with the crowd. In the fourth game, Medvedev saved two break points and landed a forehand crosscourt winner in the next one to grab a break.

Daniil squandered his opportunities on the serve in the eighth game, and Wawrinka seized the third break chance to open a 5-3 gap. Stan saved a break point with a service winner while serving for the victory in game nine and converted the second match point for a place in the quarter-final.
