German tennis star Alexander Zverev has withdrawn from Seoul. Zverev, 25, was set to debut at the inaugural Korea Open next week.

Unfortunately, this confirms that Zverev indeed contracted a serious injury while preparing for the Davis Cup Finals group stage.

Zverev, who tore several ankle ligaments during his French Open semifinal versus Rafael Nadal, was scheduled to return to action during last week’s Davis Cup Finals group stage in Hamburg. Just a day before the start of the tournament, Zverev called for a press conference, during which he announced that he had sustained a bone edema injury.

Zverev announced he would be ‘out for months’

“I am very disappointed to miss out on playing this week,” Zverev said. “It was a massive goal for me to play here because it is my hometown and a I know the stadium very well.

I have a bone edema issue which causes me quite a lot of pain. I don’t know if it happened yesterday or not but yesterday in practice with Oscar [Otte] it got to the point where I couldn’t run or walk anymore. I subsequently found out that it was a bone edema, which means I wont be able to participate here and it is not a question of days, it is more a question of weeks or most likely even months.”

Zverev, who decided to skip the US Open, said his goal was to return for the Davis Cup Finals just because it was a chance for him to represent his country. “To be honest, if it had been any other tournament then I would probably have still taken some further time off to get myself ready, but to play in my hometown of Hamburg is very special,” Zverev said. Unfortunately for Zverev and the German team, he was forced to miss out on Davis Cup action.
