Liverpool must heed Man Utd's Jadon Sancho approach in Jude Bellingham transfer pursuit

Liverpool have been warned that they may have to pay over the odds for Jude Bellingham as they try and learn a valuable lesson from Manchester United.

The Reds have been consistently linked with a move for the Borussia Dortmund midfielder as his performances for the Bundesliga giants and England earn him admiring glances from across Europe.

Liverpool are expected to move for the former Birmingham City starlet next summer having signed Juventus’ Arthur Melo on a season-long loan as a stopgap. They do retain an option to sign the latter on a permanent deal but that appears unlikely considering that the 26-year-old has only been granted 13 minutes of first-team action for the club so far – that coming in the shocking 4-1 defeat at the hands of Italian titans Napoli.

Bellingham appears to be a far better option for the present and the future but it appears that Liverpool will have to dig deep to secure his signature.

According to The Athletic, there is no release clause written into the midfielder’s contract at the Westfalenstadion and Dortmund value Bellingham at €150million (£131.6m).

Of course, the 19-year-old could well prove to be worth that amount – and thus make that considerable outlay look like a bargain – but such a fee comes with a huge amount of risk. Ironically, fierce rivals Manchester United have been in the exact position that Liverpool find themselves in.

The Red Devils’ admiration of Jadon Sancho was made clear long before the winger eventually made the switch to Old Trafford. Negotiations between the two clubs dragged on for a considerable amount of time before United eventually found a breakthrough in talks and elected to pay just under £73m for his services.

Thus far, Sancho has not yet managed to live up to that price tag, having scored just eight goals for the Red Devils – a huge decrease on the 16 he hit in his final season with Dortmund.

Meanwhile, United’s local rivals Manchester City have benefitted hugely following negotiations with Dortmund, paying the release clause written into Erling Haaland’s contract. That decision looks to have been a masterstroke, with the Norwegian already plundering 14 goals from his opening 10 games in all competitions under the stewardship of Pep Guardiola.

Liverpool, unfortunately, do not have the luxury of choosing to pay a pre-agreed fee, whilst Jurgen Klopp has already recognised that it would be tricky to convince Dortmund to sell Bellingham.

Speaking earlier this summer, the Reds boss said of the youngster: “He’s not on the market, so that’s the first problem with that player. Actually, it’s the only problem with this player.”

Of course, United have shown exactly how to secure Bellingham’s signature – but that may force the Reds into paying over the odds for his services.
