Wolves must unleash Chem Campbell

Wolverhampton Wanderers reportedly had to fight off plenty of suitors for their star winger Pedro Neto this summer.

The Portuguese ace was ravaged by injuries last season, but during the 2020/21 season, he scored five and assisted six in a return dressed up with blistering pace and glittering skill.

Can Chem Campbell surpass Neto at Wolves?

Yes

Yes

No

No

If they are to one day lose him, they may have that blow softened by a youth product who could more than fill his boots.

Chem Campbell has a rare skillset, with end-product at youth level to match his quick feet.

Last season Bruno Lage commended the 19-year-old for his “fantastic season”, clearly showing that he is on the manager’s radar.

His comments were no surprise, however, as nine goals and nine assists in 19 Premier League 2 matches suggest he is far above this station.

The fact that these goals are spread out too, with three from his right foot, three from his left and the final three from his head, could even suggest that his skillset could exceed Neto’s with some added experience.

He has started this season in similar form, with one goal and one assist in just three matches for the U23s. His form has seen him even make two late appearances for the first team.

There is no doubting he possesses all the ability to be a success, and as the second youngest player ever to play for Wolves, he is well thought of too.

James Collins, his boss at U23 level, had the following to say after the forward earned his debut: “He’s matured as a man and that has really been a pleasure to see. He’s always been a very talented boy, but sometimes it takes the really talented boys time to realise that it’s not just talent that gets you through.

“He’s now putting it all together and having an impact on games with goals and assists, and he’s also willing to do the work for the team out of possession”

Those at the club seem almost expectant that he will be one of the club’s shining lights, and with the future of Neto still up in the air, they can rest assured in the knowledge that his replacement is ready and raring to go.
