By Dan Ambrose: DAZN is reporting that Canelo Alvarez vs. Gennadiy Golovkin III did 1.06 million buys worldwide, which is higher than the 550,000 to 575,000 buys reported earlier today by Dan Rafael.
Rafael was quick to react to DAZN’s 1.06 million buys number, saying those were “global” numbers. The price difference between U.S PPV and pay-per-view outside of the U.S is significant. It costs more to purchase pay-per-view in the U.S than outside it.
Rafael points out that DAZN failed to mention to total revenue brought in for the Canelo vs. Golovkin III fight. Rafael believes that the 1.06 million global buys won’t cover the $75 million combined purses for Canelo and Golovkin. If the revenue brought in by DAZN with the global PPV numbers, they’re going to lose money on the fight.
It would be nice if DAZN came forward to report the total revenue brought in for the Canelo-Golovkin III fight because if it’s less than $75, then they’ve lost money on the fight.
DAZN obviously knows the real deal, and if they’re trying to whitewash the actual revenue hauled in for the Canelo-Golovkin III fight, it’s not going to change the money they’re losing on the fight. Ultimately, they’ll know that they made a massive mistake by agreeing to put on the Canelo vs. Golovkin III fight.
There would have been a lot of interest from fans in seeing Canelo fight Golovkin a third time if they’d done it in December 2018 or early 2019, but by waiting until 2022 to make this contest, it was too late.
Golovkin has disappeared from boxing, fighting scrubs, and no longer giving interviews in English despite living in Southern California. The boxing fans have moved on and are not interested in seeing Canelo fight David Benavidez, Jermall Charlo, and Dmitry Bivol.
Those are guys that would have an excellent chance of beating him, which is probably why he’s not shown interest in fighting them. Canelo already lost to Bivol last May, and initially, he said he wanted to fight an immediate rematch.
But as soon as Canelo said that, he changed his mind and decided to fight the 40-year-old Golovkin in a trilogy, which was seen as a cherry-pick like his decision to become undisputed at 168 against flawed champions from Europe.

The 1st Canelo-GGG fight did 1.3M PPV buys in the US. The rematch did 1.1M PPV buys in the US. The 3rd is going to be between 550k-575k in the US, per sources. DAZN’s announcement of 1.06M is PPV buys for the ENTIRE WORLD. Apples to oranges.
