Rennae Stubbs weighs in on racism, difficulties Serena & Venus Williams experienced

Australian tennis legend Rennae Stubbs acknowledged that Serena and Venus Williams’ path toward glory definitely wasn’t easy and that they had to overcome lots of adversity and difficulties. Stubbs felt that the Williams sisters definitely experienced racism in at least some forms and that they had to work hard in order to be accepted and respected in the game of tennis.

“What they went through early on in their careers was pretty traumatic in some ways,” Stubbs said on the Off The Ball podcast, per Sportskeeda. “You know, they weren’t accepted by the tennis establishment, there was a lot of pushback on them.

There was basic racism in tennis. What they fought through probably made them great champions because they had to fight for everything. They had to fight for acceptance and they had to fight for respect. They probably felt like they had to win so much just to be respected and accepted.

And they were. In the end, you know, they have gotten the love that they deserve because they’re both quality people.”

Stubbs was a part of Serena Williams’ team

Stubbs, a former six-time Grand Slam champion in doubles, was with Serena during the 40-year-old’s final tournament in New York.

The week before the US Open, Williams was spotted on Arthur Ashe accompanied by Stubbs. Stubbs, who enjoyed a very successful doubles career, was probably brought in because Serena wanted to work on her net game before the US Open.

In the end, Serena’s final tournament went good as the American clinched two wins before falling short to Ajla Tomljanovic in the third round. Also, Serena teamed up with Venus for the US Open women’s doubles event.

In what was their first doubles appearance since 2018, the Williams sisters suffered a first round defeat to Lucie Hradecka and Linda Noskova. Serena Williams is retired now, while Venus has indicated that her career is not over.
