Canelo Alvarez Isn’t Making Improvements Says Abel Sanchez

By Brian Webber: Gennadiy Golovkin’s former trainer Abel Sanchez says he sees no improvement in the game of Canelo Alvarez from this fight to his previous one against Dmitry Bivol.

Sanchez feels that the 32-year-old Canelo (58-2-2, 39 KOs) has become very repetitive without any “variation.”

Sanchez didn’t say it, but the way that Canelo is fighting now, he stands no chance against Dmitry Bivol in a rematch or against fighters like David Benavidez and David Morrell. Those guys would make Canelo look as old as Golovkin.

You hate to say it but Canelo is almost as shot as Golovkin is now, and we’ll see that once he fights Bivol again or faces Benavidez. The chances are, Canelo will use his excuse about not wanting to fight Mexicans to swerve Benavidez for the remainder of his career.

That’s not going to protect the Mexican star from absorbing losses because the boxing public are going to hold his feet to the fire and demand he fights quality super middleweights instead of fodder.

We see Canelo walking forward behind a high guard looking to throw single shots that he loads up.

That approach worked against the 40-year-old Golovkin last Saturday to get Canelo a 12 round unanimous decision win, but only because the Kazakh looked old & ancient inside the ring.

The way that Canelo is fighting now is identical to how he fought against the flawed super middleweight champions from Europe that he beat to become the undisputed 168-lb champion.

Against Billy Joe Saunders, Rocky Fielding, and Callum Smith, Canelo would plod forward behind a high guard, throwing one punch at a time.

It was dimensional, but it worked against this weak bunch because they’re not overly talented.

“That’s exactly what it was. Canelo won 10 rounds; maybe for sure, nine,” said Abel Sanchez to Fight Hub TV about his thoughts about the generous scoring for Gennadiy Golovkin in his loss to Canelo Alvarez last Saturday. “118-110, 117-111 is what it should have been for Canelo.

“Sure, he’s got him boxing more and doing some of the fundamental things that he should be doing, but that’s not Gennadiy,” said Sanchez about Golovkin’s coach Johnathon Banks.

“That’s not the Gennadiy that the judges and fans are accustomed to seeing. They’re not accustomed to seeing Floyd Mayweather in a Kazakh body. They want to see that warrior that he told the Mexicans that he was going to be.

“By the ninth, tenth, eleventh, and twelfth, he [Golovkin] pressed a little bit more, but by that time, Canelo was coasting because he didn’t have to win any more rounds. I think he thought he had the fight in the bag. But as it comes out, it was probably closer than he thought.

“The Gennadiy that fought Canelo in the first fight would have destroyed Canelo in the third fight. Canelo has topped, not because he’s not fighting great guys, but he’s not getting.

“Everything he [Canelo] does is the same thing. It’s methodical. It’s the same thing. There’s no improvement there. There’s no difference; there’s no variation to anything he does.

“For him to get tired in the last third of the fight, the Golovkin that we had in the first and second fight, if he had that kind of attitude, he beats Canelo.

“If he [Golovkin] had done what he did in the last four rounds, if he had started in the fifth, it’s a different fight.

“He’s [Canelo] doing the same thing; compare the fights,” said Sanchez when asked if Canelo is doing the same thing as he did against Dmitry Bivol.

“My concern for Canelo is I heard in the Bivol fight that he gassed towards the end of the fight, as he did in this fight. Why is he gassing at the end?

“At least Gennadiy was better in the last part of the fight than he was at the beginning. Canelo was just the opposite. What is the reason for that? He tires in the Bivol fight, he tires in this fight, yet he doesn’t tire in the first two fights with us.

“We’ll see if he makes the same excuse in the next one,” said Sanchez when told that Canelo made an excuse after his loss to Bivol that he hadn’t been able to train properly.

“That’s something I would be looking at. Is he gassing out because he’s not sparring enough? You’re top-level. You’re supposed to be able to adapt and adjust. We’ll see what he says in his next fight,” Sanchez said about Canelo.
