Roger Federer and Alexander Zverev played together for the first time during the 2018 Laver Cup in Chicago. Two good friends lost a thriller to John Isner and Jack Sock, and they joined forces a year later again in Geneva. Roger and Alexander ousted Jack Sock and Denis Shapovalov 6-3, 7-5 in an hour and 37 minutes to send Team Europe 3-1 in front after day one.

Unlike a year ago, Federer and Zverev made no mistakes in front of the Swiss crowd. They stole the rivals’ serve three times and fended off an incredible 15 out of 16 break chances to limit the damage in their games and seal the deal in straight sets!

Interestingly, Shapovalov and Sock had more opportunities on the return in the first set despite losing it 6-3.

Roger Federer and Alexander Zverev won the Laver Cup match in 2019.

They wasted three break points and faced only one that was enough to propel Roger and Alexander into the lead.

Federer served at 1-1 in the opener and fended off two break points to avoid an early setback. Shapovalov got broken in the next one following a double fault that sent Team Europe into a 3-1 lead. Zverev fired a service winner to erase a break chance in the fifth game and keep his team in front.

The German served again at 5-3 and seized the fifth set point after an unreturned serve for 6-3 in 36 minutes. Jack Sock lost serve at the beginning of the second set after Zverev’s return winner to put his team into a challenging position.

Alexander confirmed the lead after saving two break points in game two. Federer had to work even harder in game four, playing against four break points and repelling them to maintain the advantage. Still, the home star lost serve at 4-3 to bring the rivals back to the positive side and increase the drama.

It was just around the corner, as Alexander experienced a massive test on his serve at 4-5. The German played against six break points and stayed calm to deny them and lock the result at 5-5. Like in the opener, Denis hit a double fault in game 11 to lose serve and push Team Europe into a late lead. Federer served at 6-5 and produced a commanding hold to send his team 3-1 after the opening day of action in Geneva.
