Prince Philip’s coffin to be moved from Royal Vault – more than a year after his death

Queen Elizabeth will be laid to rest this afternoon alongside her beloved husband of 73 years, Prince Philip.

The late Duke’s coffin is currently in the Royal Vault beneath Windsor Castle, where it was lowered after his funeral ceremony on 17 April 2021.

The monarch will briefly join him there, following the 4pm committal service.

But later this evening, both will be moved for a private burial service, which will take place at King George VI Memorial Chapel.

The couple will finally be interred together with Prince Philip’s coffin laid alongside that of his wife.

Prince Philip’s internment was only ever meant to be temporary, with the plan always being to reunite the couple after their death.

The Queen’s coffin was made for her more than 30 years ago, by the same firm that made that for her husband.

The couple will also rest near the remains of the Queen’s father,  King George VI, her mother the Queen Mother and her sister, Princess Margaret, all of whom lie in the tiny King George VI Memorial Chapel.

Princess Margaret broke tradition by requesting her remains be cremated.
