By Jim Calfa: Gennadiy Golovkin believes Canelo Alvarez waited four years to finally face him because he didn’t want it after their second fight in 2018.

Golovkin (42-1-1, 37 KOs) feels that Canelo is only doing it now because it’s the last fight on his DAZN contract, and they wanted the fight. DAZN wanted that fight a long time ago, and surprisingly, it’s taken this long for it to happen.

As Canelo says he wants to send Golovkin into retirement, GGG says it’s not for him to decide whether he retires.

Golovkin feels that if it was personal enough for Canelo (57-2-2, 39 KOs) to want to send him into retirement, why didn’t he fight him a long time ago after their rematch in 2018?

This Saturday, September 17th, Canelo will defend his undisputed super middleweight championship against Golovkin on DAZN pay-per-view at the T-Mobile Arena in Las  Vegas.

If Golovkin loses, the rivalry will be done, but if he wins, there will be a huge demand for a fourth fight. Canelo then would need to decide whether he wants to face Golovkin again to try and avenge the loss.

“When it was announced that this fight is going to take place, I thought to myself, ‘Maybe now is the time for this fight,’ and I had to make a decision whether to take it or not. I decided that I should do it,”  said Gennadiy Golovkin to the media about his trilogy fight against Canelo Alvarez.

“He has the right to say it’s personal, but let me tell you what I see. I think he says it because this is the last fight on DAZN. There’s an agreement with DAZN, and after that, there will be no obligations,” Golovkin continued about Canelo.

“This situation and thinking about my situation that a lot of time has passed. Four years and now, he thinks he’s in a position to voice those accusations and say he can knock me out and finish my career.

“Who is he to start and finish somebody’s career? Maybe he just tries to score some points, and based on his age and his position; it’s not up to him. If he wanted this fight back then and felt that it was personal, that fight should have happened immediately.

“Why was he waiting four years?” said Golovkin about why Canelo waited until now to finally face him.
