Panel: What happens when Saúl “Canelo” Álvarez and Gennady Golovkin meet for a third time this weekend?

This week’s panellists were asked to pick a winner in Saturday’s trilogy fight between Saul “Canelo” Alvarez and Gennady Golovkin

Wayne McCullough (Former WBC bantamweight champion)

I think the third fight between Canelo Álvarez and Gennady Golovkin will go the distance. GGG didn’t look that great in his last fight, although he got the win, and Canelo was of course upset in his last one. They have both shown signs of getting old. Canelo should have enough left to outbox GGG but GGG will always be in the fight and the rounds will be close. I’m taking Canelo by decision.

Michael Conlan (Featherweight contender)

I see another Canelo win, and more comfortable than last time. The first two fights were nip and tuck; I had GGG winning the first and drawing the second. But now, with GGG’s age, plus how active and dominant Canelo has been, I think Canelo wins wide on the scorecards.

Wayne Alexander (Former European super-welterweight champion)

I can see it being another close and exciting contest because these two fighters’ styles are just made for each other. I believe both are probably past their peak years, though Golovkin more so than Álvarez. I see GGG having a good start and then Canelo taking over in the middle rounds to win a close but unanimous points decision.

Ryan Walsh (Former British featherweight champion)

The unthinkable will happen with the formidable Kazakh finally succumbing to Father Time. Unfortunately, there have been signs in GGG’s last few fights, especially against Sergiy Derevyanchenko. I’m going for Canelo to win by KO in the final installment of a great trilogy. It is currently 1-1 on my card, so this will be a fitting end.
