Former world No. 17 Bernard Tomic has captured his first title since 2018 after winning a 15K ITF event in Cancun. In the Cancun final, Tomic defeated Tristan McCormick 7-6 (4) 6-3. In five matches played in Cancun, Tomic didn’t drop a single set.

The Cancun final started on Sunday as Tomic was up by a set before the rain suspended play. On Monday, Tomic and McCormick returned to the court as the Australian managed to complete a straight-set win. It was Tomic’s first title since 2018 Chengdu, when he defeated Fabio Fognini in the final for his fourth ATP title.

Tomic shares a message

After winning Cancun, Tomic shared an inspirational message on his Instagram Story that read: “One bad chapter doesn’t mean that your story is over,” Before the 2022 season began, Tomic said that he was determined to get his career back on the right track.

“I’ve had a lot of hate in my life. But I can’t give up. You don’t think I see the hate comments? It hurts,” Tomic said in December. “In the past I used to let it get to me and react out of stupidity.

But now I’m using it as fuel. I’m back. I’m hungry, and I’m ready. No one can stop me now, but me. “I’m training, I’m sweating, I’m pushing, I’m fired up. Whatever it takes to get back on top.

Hard work pays off. I’ve put my blood sweat and tears into this sport. I have come back before. It’s time to set the record straight.” Unfortunately for Tomic, he caught COVID-19 in Australia at the start of the year and that negatively impacted his start of the year.

In last two weeks, Tomic decided to return to the ITF level and to try to gain some wins and confidence. After losing in the Cancun quarterfinal a week earlier, Tomic stayed in Mexico and made it all the way at the tournament this past week.
