Juan Martin del Potro feels the Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner could be “the Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic rivalry of this generation.” On Wednesday, Alcaraz and Sinner put up an absolute show on Arthur Ashe Stadium.

After five hours and 15 minutes of grueling battle, Alcaraz defeated Sinner 6-3 6-7 (7) 6-7 (0) 7-5 6-3. The match finished at 2.50am and set the new record for latest finish in tournament history. Alcaraz saved a match point in the fourth set and recovered from a break down in the fifth set.

“I am fascinated with the level of tennis of these kids. It will be the Federer-Nadal of the next few years,” del Potro told ESPN.

Del Potro enjoyed the Alcaraz and Sinner showdown

After losing twice to Sinner this summer, Alcaraz has finally managed to beat the Italian.

At Wimbledon, Sinner defeated Alcaraz in the last-16. A few weeks later, Sinner beat Alcaraz in the Umag final for his first title of the season. In New York, Sinner had a match point to clinch his third victory of the season versus Alcaraz.

But Alcaraz miraculously managed to pull off a victory. The head-to-head between the two on the main level now stands at 2-2. “We are friends off court and on court when we practice or play against each other. We try to compete in the best possible way, which I think is very nice to see.

Well you know we are young. We two are young but we both play incredible tennis. So, let’s see the future what’s going to happen. I hope so, really, because when we play against each other, we raise our level to our maximum,” Sinner said.

Sinner and Alcaraz have delivered three matches this season. It remains to be seen if we will see another Sinner and Alcaraz matchup before the season ends.
