Juan Martin del Potro has urged Jannik Sinner to keep his head up as he has told the Italian that he will certainly be “a great champion” in the future. In the US Open quarterfinal, Sinner suffered a heartbreaking five-set defeat to Carlos Alcaraz.

Sinner had a match point in the fourth set and was up by a break in the fifth set, before Alcaraz stormed back to win 6-3 6-7 (7) 6-7 (0) 7-5 6-3. “I Ieft everything out there last night, but it wasn’t meant to be.

The atmosphere was something special that I’ll never forget. This one hurts, but back to work & onto the next. @carlosalcaraz, congrats, it was an incredible battle! Good luck for the rest of the tournament,” Sinner wrote on Twitter.

Del Potro to Sinner: You will be a great champion

“I know it hurts a match like that. You will be a great champion! Forza jannik!” del Potro wrote in a response to Sinner’s Twitter post.

Del Potro, who retired from professional tennis earlier this year, made a very honest and sad admission on the opening day of this year’s US Open.

“This time of the year makes me miss a lot playing tennis,” del Potro tweeted on the opening day of the US Open. In 2009, del Potro put up a stunning run at the US Open to clinch his first and lone Grand Slam title.

13 years ago, del Potro defeated Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer in back-to-back matches to win the US Open. In his final US Open appearance – which came in 2018 – del Potro reached the final, in which he ended runner-up to Novak Djokovic.

Del Potro, 33, was out for two and a half years before returning to action earlier this year in Buenos Aires. Del Potro returned only for Buenos Aires as he wanted to say goodbye to tennis in front of his home fans and on a tennis court.
