Gary Neville allays fears over Liverpool "phenomenon" amid poor start to the season

Liverpool continued their inconsistent start to the new season at the weekend as they stumbled to a stalemate against Merseyside rivals Everton.

The usually cohesive and organised Reds practically stumbled over the line at Goodison Park and were probably somewhat fortunate to depart with a point to their name. That result leaves the Reds with just two wins out of their opening six games of the season and in seventh place in the Premier League table.

Whilst that position and points haul will be disappointing and needs to be addressed sooner rather than later – Jurgen Klopp having confirmed as much – it is still not time to declare a full-blown crisis at Anfield, particularly where the manager is confirmed.

Opposition fans have of course been left delighted at the current situation on Merseyside so much so that they have called into question Klopp’s own position at the club – something that is a stretch considering his excellent work thus far and the fact that the German only committed his future until 2026 back in April.

That is certainly an opinion that Manchester United icon Gary Neville holds, with the former defender suggesting that any calls over Klopp’s job with Liverpool are premature and is backing the German to get his side out of the current mire – if it can be called that – that they find themselves in.

Speaking on his podcast, Neville said: “Jurgen Klopp is an absolute phenomenon, but I think to myself where would Jurgen Klopp go now that you think would be better for him than Liverpool Football Club in the way in which the Premier League is dominating?

“He has played in Champions League finals, he is competing against the other best managers in the world that are here at the moment. So, at the moment, I don’t believe that’s fair, I don’t believe that’s right.”

He continued: “It looks like he is enjoying his time at Anfield too much to me, he enjoys the football, he enjoys the league, I think he enjoys Liverpool fans, and it would be wishful thinking of Manchester United fans to think that Jurgen Klopp was leaving, and I don’t think that’s the case.”

Of course, should Liverpool’s current inconsistent form extend for a longer period and they continue to fall even further out of the race for the Premier League title – as well as fail to challenge any other silverware – then questions will certainly need to be asked.

For the time being though, the German is worthy of being handed far more time by the Anfield hierarchy and is given the opportunity to get Liverpool challenging once more – as he has done in the past – and that now starts once more with this season’s first Champions League group game against Napoli on Wednesday evening.
