Daniil Medvedev makes one thing clear regarding Rafael Nadal’s US Open title chances

World No. 1 Daniil Medvedev says Rafael Nadal also needs to be mentioned as the top favorite for the US Open title. Medvedev, who lifted his first Grand Slam title after beating Novak Djokovic in last year’s US Open final, is considered as the top favorite for the US Open title.

But Medvedev says Nadal needs to be mentioned in the same sentence as well. “I don’t want to put pressure on anybody, but I think Rafa is a big favourite also. He won the last time he played here against me actually.

He won two Slams this year. He actually didn’t lose in a Grand Slam this year,” Medvedev said, per Sportskeeda.

Medvedev through to the US Open third round

On Wednesday, Medvedev saw off Arthur Rinderknech 6-2 7-5 6-3 to set up a US Open third round meeting with Yibing Wu.

The match was played on Arthur Ashe Stadium, just after Serena Williams completed a big three-set win over second-seeded Anett Kontaveit. “In general, I’m happy with my level in the third set, so that’s great,” said Medvedev.

“At the end of the match, it was getting better and better. At the same time a win is the most important, three sets. Try to get out as early as possible even if it is pretty late. Looking forward for next round.” During the match, Medvedev realized 5-of-17 of his break point chances and saved all three break points he faced on his own serve.

“I was actually not super happy with my level, said Medvedev. “At the same time, it’s sometimes really tough to play at night. All the day waiting. I usually like it, but a little bit in the beginning can be a little bit tricky.”

Now, Medvedev plays 174th-ranked qualifier Wu. Wu has already won five matches at the US Open this year, but it is hard to envision him being a serious threat to Medvedev.
