Ajla Tomljanovic reveals Novak Djokovic trick she plans to use versus Serena Williams

Ajla Tomljanovic is planning to take a trick from Novak Djokovic’s book when she meets Serena Williams in the US Open third round. When Djokovic plays Rafael Nadal or Roger Federer, he usually has the whole stadium turned against him.

In the 2019 Wimbledon final, Djokovic took on Roger Federer. It seemed that the whole stadium was rooting for Federer, but Djokovic managed to get the win after saving two championship points. When Djokovic was asked about the crowd chanting Federer’s name throughout the final, he said: “The only thing I heard was Nole, Nole.”

When Tomljanovic meets Williams in front of a certainly sold out Arthur Ashe Stadium, she will likely have the whole stadium turned against her.

Tomljanovic to take a trick from Djokovic’s book

“I remember Novak saying one time when they asked him a lot about this, when the crowd was against him, he just pretends it’s for him.

When they chant, I don’t know, Rafa, Roger, whoever, he hears Novak, Novak. I kind of liked that response. I might use that on Friday night,” Tomljanovic told Eurosport. In the US Open second round, Williams defeated second-seeded Anett Kontaveit in front of a record-breaking US Open attendance.

Nearly 30,000 people in the stands stood behind Williams and Kontaveit admitted afterward that it wasn’t easy playing in those conditions. “I kept thinking, ‘Oh my God, that’s annoying me and I’m not even playing against her’,” Tomljanovic added.

“I don’t know how I’m going to do it. I think what I’m going to focus on is to keep the scoreline close because I think she gets dangerous if she gets up. She’s the best when she gets ahead”. Tomljanovic will be meeting Williams for the first time when they meet in the US Open third round. It remains to be seen if Tomljanovic can end Williams’ career.
