Sane equaliser spares Die Roten blushes

Bayern Munich were spared the blushes of a rare home defeat at the hands of Borussia Monchengladbach thanks to a late Leroy Sane equaliser at the Allianz Arena on Saturday.

Bayern had started the 2022/23 Bundesliga season on fire, averaging five goals per game across their first three fixtures and netting seven last time out against Bochum.

But Bayern almost fell victim to a smash and grab by Gladbach, having dominated possession and peppered Yann Sommer’s goals with shot after shot – they managed 33 total attempts in 90 minutes, an astonishing 20 of which were on target.

Yet it was Gladbach who scored first when Marcus Thuram found the net in the closing stages of the first half. It was a swift breakaway from Gladbach, with the Frenchman quick enough to stay ahead of fellow countryman Dayot Upamecano and keep his composure to finish beyond Manuel Neuer.

Try as they might, Bayern could not find a way through to get back on level terms and it looked like it was going to be ‘one of those days’ for the reigning Bundesliga champions.

But Gladbach’s resistance was eventually broken with seven minutes left on the clock. Alphonso Davies moved inside from the left and found Jamal Musiala in the crowded box, who in turn laid the ball off to Sane by the penalty spot for a first-time finish that wrong-footed Sommer.

Despite dropping points for the first time this season, Bayern remain top of the Bundesliga table. However, Union Berlin are level with them on 10 points after their thrashing of Schalke.
