United States senator Ted Cruz thinks it is “idiotic” that Novak Djokovic is missing out on the US Open because of his vaccination status. On Thursday, Djokovic withdrew from the US Open and it is now confirmed that the 21-time Grand Slam champion indeed won’t be participating at the final Grand Slam of the season.

“This is idiotic,” Cruz tweeted after Djokovic officially pulled out of the US Open.

It’s not the first time this summer that Cruz has blasted the Joe Biden administration for their law that prevents unvaccinated foreigners from entering the country.

In last month’s interview with The Daily Mail, Cruz had a short but very clear message: “Let Novak Djokovic play.”

Djokovic announced his withdrawal on Thursday

Just beforee the US Open draw was made, Djokovic pulled out from the tournament.

“Sadly, I will not be able to travel to NY this time for US Open,” Djokovic announced on Thursday. “Thank you #NoleFam for your messages of love and support. Good luck to my fellow players! I’ll keep in good shape and positive spirit and wait for an opportunity to compete again.

See you soon tennis world!” Djokovic withdrawing from the US Open means he won’t be battling for his fourth title at Flushing Meadows this year. The United States Tennis Association released a statement, calling Djokovic “a great champion” and stating that it’s “unfortunate” that he’s missing out on this year’s tournament edition.

“Novak is a great champion and it is very unfortunate that he will be unable to compete at the 2022 US Open, as he is unable to enter the country due to the federal government’s vaccination policy for non-US citizens.

We look forward to welcoming Novak back at the 2023 US Open,” the USTA said in a statement released. With Djokovic out, Rafael Nadal has a chance to win his 23rd Grand Slam and again go two Majors ahead of the Serb.
