Mary Carillo gives her verdict on Emma Raducanu’s talent

Mary Carillo thinks Emma Raducanu is “the real deal” and has a great concept of the game. A year ago, Raducanu made all the headlines when she wrote tennis history by becoming the first qualifier ever to win a Grand Slam.

Raducanu, who is now preparing for her US Open title defence, hasn’t won any titles since. Raducanu has been struggling with her game since the 2021 US Open and has had numerous early exits over the last 12 months. “She’s the real deal,” Carillo told the WTA website.

“She’s got beautiful strokes, a great concept of the game. I haven’t seen her in person since last year’s US Open. So I don’t know if her game has fallen off, or if her fame has made it tougher to play her game”.

Raducanu feels she is a better player now

Raducanu won the US Open in a stunning way as she didn’t drop a single set en route to winning the title. But Raducanu was playing without pressure and rivals didn’t really know much about her game.

Now that Raducanu is a Grand Slam champion, she has a target on her back as opponents are extremely motivated to beat her. “I think, like honestly, that my opponents have been playing a lot better this year, and I’m rewatching my matches from the US Open, and there are certain moments where I was given a lot of gifts or maybe they got a bit tight, or, you know, something like that,” Raducanu recently said.

“So I think I have improved actually as a player. I just, like as I’m finding this sort of freedom in my swinging, yeah, I think that I achieved something great, of course, but it was, like, I was playing completely free and I’m starting to do that again.” It remains to be seen how far can Raducanu go in New York this year.
