Arsenal news: Mikel Arteta admits to Bukayo Saka concern as he makes transfer admission

Arsenal are out to maintain their 100 per cent record in the Premier League as they travel to the south coast to take on newly-promoted Bournemouth on Saturday evening.

The Gunners are flying high after victories over Crystal Palace and Leicester, so they will be confident of getting the job done at the Vitality Stadium against a side comfortably beaten 4-0 by Manchester City in their last outing. Meanwhile, Mikel Arteta has been busy away from the training ground as the summer transfer window nears its conclusion.

The Gunners boss is keen to extend Bukayo Saka’s contract and put an end to any distraction which could arise as part of prolonged negotiations. Arteta is also out to offload a number of fringe players before the window slams shut.

All that and more as Mirror Football brings you the latest Arsenal headlines.

Arteta opens up on Saka contract

Mikel Arteta is “very confident” Bukayo Saka will extend his contract with Arsenal – but he would rather the business can be concluded sooner rather than later.

Saka, 20, is one of the Gunners’ most important players and has entered the final two years of his deal at the Emirates. While the England winger has been linked with a move to Liverpool in the past, an extension with Arsenal has always appeared the most likely option for the player, who joined the club in 2008.

Arteta would like to see him show his commitment to the North Londoners by “putting that on a piece of paper”. The Spaniard believes this would remove anything which could make his player “distracted”.

Brazil legend Ronaldinho believes Gabriel Jesus has hit the ground running with Arsenal because he is flourishing as the “focal point” – something he was not during his decorated stint with Manchester City.

Jesus scored twice and assisted twice as the Gunners defeated Leicester 4-2 last weekend, marking a brilliant home debut for the gifted forward.

“At Arsenal he has been given the chance to be the focal point, he has been shown the love by the coach and the fans, and already he is repaying that. This season I expect big things from him,” Ronaldinho said of the 25-year-old.

Arteta drops Pepe hint

Mikel Arteta was quizzed on the futures of Nicolas Pepe, Ainsley Maitland-Niles and Hector Bellerin during his press conference on Friday and appeared to suggest he is working to offload his fringe players.

Pepe’s immediate future is particularly intriguing as he remains Arsenal’s record signing, having joined in a £72million transfer from Lille in 2019.

Discussing the Ivorian, Arteta said: “What we can communicate we always do when it’s the right moment. We discussed that we have a big squad and we’ve allowed some players to leave. Until the end of the window, anything can happen.”
