Madison Keys reacts to shock victory over No. 1 seed Iga Swiatek in Cincinnati

Madison Keys, 27, admitted it felt “great” to stun world No. 1 Iga Swiatek and finally clinch her first victory over a top-ranked player in the world. In the Cincinnati round-of-16, 24th-ranked Keys claimed a shock 6-3 6-4 victory over first-seeded Swiatek.

Entering the match, Keys was 0-5 versus top-ranked players. “It feels great. I obviously have not had the best success against World No. 1s, so being able to get a win against Iga, especially after having two losses to her already, means a lot to me, and I think I’m playing some pretty good tennis,” Keys said after the match, per the WTA website.

Keys didn’t let Swiatek make a big comeback

Swiatek led 3-2 in the first set, before Keys claimed four consecutive breaks and won nine games in a row. After Keys went 6-3 5-0 up, the match appeared to be over. But Swiatek then saved two match points and got the two breaks back to cut the second set deficit to 5-4.

Just when it seemed Swiatek would make a big comeback, she failed to serve out the 10th game – the game in which she was serving to stay in the match and tie the set to five games apiece. “I was really just thinking that I had to focus a lot on why I got in the position of being up 5-Love.

I think I backed off a little bit, and I think she started playing better,” Keys added. “I just knew that I was going to have to try to put some pressure on her early in the game just to kind of also make her aware of the situation.

All of a sudden it’s 5-4 and she feels like she has to hold that game. So just really trying to swing at the ball, make sure I was moving my feet, and put as much pressure on her as quickly as possible.” Keys plays Wimbledon champion Elena Rybakina next.
