Emma Raducanu said staying fully locked in and calm was the key in her Cincinnati first round victory over Serena Williams. On Tuesday, Raducanu saw off Williams 6-4 6-0 in her Cincinnati opener. Raducanu opened an early 4-1 lead and was up by a double break.

Williams managed to get one break back and save a set point in the ninth game, but Raducanu served out for the first set in the 10th game. In the second set, Raducanu broke Williams three times and didn’t face a single break point to complete a straight-set win.

“I think from the beginning to the end, I maybe looked calm, but I just knew how important every single point was, because you let up a little bit and she’s going to be all over you,” Raducanu said after the match, per the WTA website.

“She’s just such a legend.”

Raducanu: We all need to honor Williams’ amazing career

“I think we all need to just honor Serena and her amazing career,” Raducanu told the crowd after the match.

“I’m so grateful for the experience of being able to play her and for our careers to cross over. Everything that she’s achieved is so inspirational and it was a true honor to share the court with her.” The 2022 season hasn’t been easy for Raducanu but on Tuesday she delivered one of her best performances of the year.

“I think it’s important to really cherish the wins, because I think that if anything, this year has taught me that the wins don’t come by easily. No matter what win that is, it means a lot to any athlete, and I definitely am going to take it in, be really proud of myself,” Raducanu noted. The Cincinnati crowd stood behind Williams, but Raducanu was able to stay calm and focus on her game.
