Seven-time Grand Slam champion Venus Williams and 2020 US Open champion Dominic Thiem have been announced as wildcard recipients into this year’s US Open.

Williams, 42, made her US Open debut in 1997, when she impressively reached the final as a teenager.

26 years later, Williams is still active and preparing to compete at the US Open after skipping the tournament last year. On the other side, Thiem is also set to return to Flushing Meadows after not competing at the tournament a year ago.

In 2020, Thiem lifted his first Grand Slam title after beating Alexander Zverev in the US Open final. In June 2021, Thiem sustained a wrist injury, which kept him out for the rest of the season so he didn’t get a chance to defend his US Open title.

Williams still searching for her first victory in 2022

Three weeks ago in Washington, Williams played her first singles tournament in 12 months. In Washington, Williams had a 4-1 lead in the third set versus Rebecca Marino, but failed to close out the match.

Last week in Toronto, Williams was beaten in straight sets by Jil Teichmann. This Tuesday, Williams clashed 2021 Wimbledon finalist Karolina Pliskova. In the Cincinnati first round, it was Pliskova that escaped with a 7-5 6-1 victory.

Williams started the match with an early break but Pliskova recovered and in the end won a tight opener. After losing a tight first set, Williams’ game collapsed as Pliskova dominated the second set to complete a straight-set win.

“She raised her game in the second set and I just made too many errors. But definitely not an easy first round. And she’s been playing well, I guess, all year? I really don’t know. But she played well today against me,” Williams said after the match. The US Open starts on August 29. It remains to be seen how will Williams and Thiem do at this year’s US Open.
