During her post-match conference after the won Toronto final against Beatriz Haddad-Maia, Romanian Simona Halep was asked by Christina Rutherford, a Canadian Sports Net journalist, how will she celebrate with her Hungarian fans.
“We’ll be celebrating on the tennis court tomorrow because I’m going to Cincinnati, so we’ll all be at practice. That will be our celebration, there is not much time for that, that’s what I mean, I already have another tournament scheduled.
I’m trying to recover and be ready for the next game. As for the fans, the Romanian fans, they were wonderful and I want to thank them for coming and supporting me”, said Simona Halep. Halep accentuated the words “Romanian fans” to discretely inform the journalist of her mistake of confusing Romania with Hungary, which are two neighboring but different countries.
After triumphing at the National Bank Open twice in Montreal, Halep’s 3rd title at the tournament came in Toronto following a 6-3 2-6 6-3 win over Beatriz Haddad Maia in the final. “It makes it even more special because I really wanted to win it in Toronto as well,” Halep added.
“Here there are many Romanians and they always come to support me. So I’m really happy that I could also win here”.

After being out of the top-10 for just over a year, Halep is back where she has spent a significant amount of time in recent years.
“I’ve been many years there but now I feel like it’s a big deal to be back in top 10,” Halep said, per the WTA website “When I started the year I was not very confident and I set the goal to be, at the end of the year, top 10.
