World No. 1 Iga Swiatek admitted that her Toronto campaign “did not go exactly” as she wanted but added she loved playing at the Canadian tournament. Last week, Swiatek kicked off her summer on hard courts at a WTA 1000 event in Toronto.
After crushing Ajla Tomljanovic by a 6-1 6-2 score in her Toronto opener, Swiatek suffered a shock 6-4 3-6 7-5 loss to Beatriz Haddad Maia in the last-16. “This week didn’t go exactly as I wanted but I loved playing in Toronto.

Swiatek after suffering a shock loss to Haddad Maia
The playing conditions were very tricky during the Swiatek and Haddad Maia match.
A strong wind was blowing and it was causing Swiatek’s troubles. After the match, Swiatek admitted that she was having a hard time adjusting to Haddad Maia’s playing style because she’s a lefty. Also, Swiatek said she would have probably figured out how to play Haddad Maia if not for a strong wind.
“I think at the beginning I struggled to find my rhythm on the court. Probably because she’s lefty and I had a hard time adjusting to her serve. And plus the wind. I think without the wind I would manage. But it was pretty crazy out there,” Swiatek said after the loss.
Haddad Maia took the advantage of the tricky playing conditions and clinched the biggest victory of her career. “I think she used the conditions better than me. And when she was playing with the wind she was playing really strong balls.
And sometimes I was late for them. And on the other hand she was able to, you know, put the balls in,” Swiatek added. This week, Swiatek will be hoping to bounce back in Cincinnati. Swiatek is the first-seeded player there and has a first round bye.
