Two-time Major winner Simona Halep won her third National Bank Open title on Sunday in Toronto, Canada, defeating Brazilian star Beatriz Haddad Maia 6-3, 2-6, 6-3.

Needing two hours and 17 minutes to prevail, Halep overcame a 0-3 deficit in the first set before reeling off six straight games. Hitting nine double faults on the day, Halep quickly saw herself down 4-0 in the second set, before her opponent forced a decider.

With everything to play for, it was Halep that showed her experience and gained a comfortable 3-1 lead. Fending off the firepower of her tall opponent, Halep captured her 24th career title and topped the 40 million dollar mark in career prize money.

Improving to No. 6 in the world in the latest rankings, Halep will next see action at the Western & Southern Open in Cincinnati, Ohio. Haddad Maia will move up to No. 16 in the world on Monday.

Over in Montreal, Spaniard Pablo Carreno Busta claimed the biggest title of his career by ousting Pole Hubert Hurkacz 3-6, 6-3, 6-3.

Previously reaching the semifinals of the US Open on two occasions, Carreno Busta hit four aces, won 73 percent of his first serve points and broke serve on three occasions.

Ousting Matteo Berrettini and Jannik Sinner earlier in the event, Carreno Busta will be ranked No. 14 on Monday. Hurkacz will move up to No. 10 when the latest rankings are released.
