Tommy Paul admitted he was in awe of Carlos Alcaraz’s quickness. On Wednesday. Paul clashed Alcaraz for the first time in his career. In their first meeting, Paul recovered from a set and two breaks down to shock Alcaraz 6-7 (4) 7-6 (7) 6-3 in the Montreal Masters second round.
After the match, Paul kept it classy as he spoke extremely highly of ALcaraz, describing him as a “super nice kid.” “Yeah, definitely [a very entertaining match]. There was no real drops in in level in the match overall, it was just a lot of fun being on court,” Paul said on Tennis Channel, per Sportskeeda.
“Carlos Alcaraz is a super nice kid, great sport win or lose, so I think we were just enjoying being out there.”
Paul: Alcaraz was crazy fast on court
There are no lost points for Alcaraz and Paul couldn’t believe at some of the balls the 19-year-old Spaniard was able to return in play.
“He was crazy fast on court today, I couldn’t believe it. I mean, I knew he was quick but he got to some balls that there’s no one else on tour that’s getting to. He was hitting him like good balls back,” Paul said.
After winning a tight first set, Alcaraz broke Paul twice at the start of the second set. Just when it seemed the match was over, Paul started playing much better and escaped with a three-set win. “I think it was like 4-1 or 4-2 down.
I was over on my coach’s side and he was like ‘you dropped your level a little bit, you got to bring it back up’ and that’s what I realized him going up a break in the second was him maintaining his level and me dropping a little bit.
