Man Utd fans split on striking new kit to be worn in Erik ten Hag's second match as boss

Manchester United have released their striking new third kit – and it’s split fan opinion.

Adidas ‘ latest effort comes in a bright green colourway, sure to be one of the most eye-catching and debated shirts from the 2022-23 Premier League season which the Red Devils began with a calamitous 2-1 loss to Brighton last weekend. Next up is a trip to Brentford on Saturday, where United will debut the vibrant kit.

While boasting a dazzling pattern, the crewneck collar harkens back to the fashion of the 1990s, an era in which the Red Devils dominated English football and asserted their status as one of the biggest clubs on the planet. The standard replica shirt for an adult costs a staggering £75. But if supporters want to get their hands on an authentic version which has a few added details, they’ll need to fork out a whopping £90. Both are made from 100 per cent recycled materials in a bid to combat plastic waste.

It seems that not every fan will be queuing up to purchase one, though, as the Old Trafford faithful are divided on the unique design. One Red Devils fan was repulsed, tweeting: “That is proper hideous!” Another Twitter user felt similar, saying: “One of the worst kits I have seen in ages!”

However, there was some support, as a more positive fan asked: “What’s wrong with lime and black? I like it.” They were followed by another defender of the shirt, who wrote: “I know it’s cool to be negative and trolly against United but this is not bad at all, the home kit looks worse. If the logo was from a different club you wouldn’t tweet this, it’ just ‘make fun of everything United related’.” A rival fan then joked: “To be fair this looks like their only bright thing this season.”

The new Man Utd third shirt will be first worn against Brentford

United’s main focus, of course, is about getting good results in the kit. Thomas Frank ‘s Brentford will provide a stern test in the teatime kick-off on Saturday, as Erik ten Hag targets his first win as manager. The Red Devils boss wants his team to learn their lessons from last time out, insisting that United must get in the habit of to responding to setbacks in a positive manner.

“We have to deal with the setback, learn from the mistakes and move forward,” Ten Hag declared. “We have to deal with it and I knew from the start that it would not to be easy, it takes time but you don’t have time and we have to win games.”

Man Utd and England Women’s hero Alessia Russo also modelled the shirt

Defender Diogo Dalot echoed his manager’s sentiment, adding: ‘It is a setback but in football you don’t have time to think a little bit, now we have to analyse and definitely do better. There were still some positives, the second half we had some good plays, we were a little bit more organised. We are going to have some time this week to organise and definitely do better for Brentford.”

Start striker Cristiano Ronaldo could return to the starting XI after only playing 37 minutes against Brighton due to fitness concerns. Meanwhile, Ten Hag is set to provide an update on Anthony Martial ‘s fitness in his pre-match press conference, as the French forward missed the match entirely through injury.
