Kei Nishikori has accepted a wildcard into the San Diego Open, the tournament announced. Nishikori, 32, is set to make his debut on the hard courts of San Diego. Last year, the San Diego tournament held its inaugural edition.

Nishikori was one of the players that were expected to highlight the tournament’s edition but he was forced to withdraw from the tournament due to an injury. Nishikori didn’t get a chance to compete in San Diego last year, but he is expected to debut at the tournament this year.

Nishikori excited about coming to San Diego

“I want to thank the San Diego Open ATP 250 for the Wild Card. It’s exciting to have the opportunity to come to a beautiful city like San Diego and play at Barnes Tennis Center.

I’ve heard so many great things about last year’s tournament. Players said the Stadium Court is very nice and the fans were fantastic. I’m really looking forward to playing this event in September,” Nishikori said in a statement released.

Nishikori is one of the most likable and respected players on the ATP Tour. With that being said, the San Diego organizers are thrilled to have a chance to host Nishikori at the tournament. “We are very happy to extend a Wild Card to Kei Nishikori.

Fans will have a great opportunity to watch the top Asian player in the history of the ATP Tour,” said Tournament Director Ryan Redondo. “We are looking forward to having a strong international player field for September’s ATP 250 tournament at Barnes Tennis Center”.

Meanwhile, Nishikori hasn’t played any tournament in 2022. Nishikori, who underwent a hip surgery in January, was expected to return to action at the Winston-Salem Open, which starts on August 21. But Nishikori decided to return the wildcard he was given into Winston-Salem. When it comes to San Diego, the tournament there starts on September 19.
