American tennis legend John McEnroe says Serena Williams deserved to go out the way she wanted and added the 23-time Grand Slam champion is among the greatest players in American sports history. On Tuesday, Williams revealed her plans to retire from tennis at this year’s US Open.

Williams is widely considered as one of the greatest player the game has ever seen. McEnroe thinks Williams is in the league of Michael Jordan, LeBron James and Tom Brady.

McEnroe: Williams is truly one of the greatest athletes in all sports history

“She should do whatever she wants.

She’s an icon. Her place in American society has gone to a place where she deserves it after everything she’s accomplished, everything she’s done,” McEnroe told USA Today. “I don’t know the answer whether she wants to play again, I don’t think she needs to play again.

She’s in that level where Michael Jordan, LeBron James and Tom Brady are. She’s like one of the all-time greatest athletes in the history of any sport — male or female. It seems to be a great place in her life. She’s added a lot.

Anyone that saw the movie (King Richard) realises where they came from and where she is now is unbelievable so she can spend the rest of her life going ‘not bad huh’?” Williams retiring from tennis at the US Open was the expected scenario.

When Willliams announced her decision to return to action at Wimbledon, the general expectation was that Williams was preparing to say goodbye to tennis at the US Open. This week, Williams confirmed that she indeed plans to end her professional career in front of her home fans at the US Open.

In 1999, Williams became a Grand Slam champion after winning the US Open. Since then, Williams has won six more US Open singles titles.
