Arsenal transfer news LIVE: Youri Tielemans standoff, Sandro Tonali interest plus Cody Gakpo concern

Arsenal’s convincing 2-0 victory over Crystal Palace to kickstart their Premier League campaign last Friday is well and truly in the rearview mirror.

The Gunners are now looking to add more new signings to Mikel Arteta’s squad, made five signings so far, as Leicester City midfielder Youri Tielemans continues to be a top target for Arsenal technical director Edu alongside Villarreal wonderkid Yeremy Pino.

Meanwhile, Sandro Tonali and Cody Gakpo are being looked at by Emirates chiefs, who’re also keen to ship out some unwanted players. After it emerged that Albert Sambi Lokonga is now the subject of transfer talks between the Gunners and AC Milan, fellow castoffs Pablo Mari, Hector Bellerin and Nicolas Pepe are all set to leave north London before September 1’s deadline day.

Be sure to stick with Mirror Football right here for all of Thursday’s transfer news from the Emirates.

Pino breakthrough

Arsenal’s pursuit of Villarreal star Yeremy Pino looks to be bearing fruit amid reports they have made an offer which is deemed suitable by the Spanish club.

The 19-year-old is considered one of the rising talents in La Liga and Arsenal could capitalise on Villarreal’s financial problems to land the winger’s services. Pino has a £67.5m release clause, but Villarreal are desperate to make a big sale this summer after missing out on the Champions League.

According to Spanish publication AS, Arsenal have lodged a bid worth £33m, which is set to be accepted by Villarreal. The transfer would represent a real coup for the Gunners, given rivals Liverpool had also been monitoring Pino’s progress.

Arteta’s signings scrutinised

AC Milan are reportedly interested in signing Arsenal midfielder Albert Sambi Lokonga… just 13 months after he arrived at the Emirates.

Lokonga, 22, was part of Mikel Arteta’s £145million spending spree last summer. The Gunners paid Anderlecht £17.2m for the Belgium international’s services, but he’s struggled to make an impact in England – playing just 20 Premier League games to date.

But how have the rest of Arsenal’s signings from last summer got on?

Saliba’s dream shirt number

William Saliba looks set to land his dream shirt number at Arsenal with Hector Bellerin closing in on a departure from the Premier League side.

Saliba has returned to the Gunners following three seasons on loan in Ligue 1 and looks set to be one of Mikel Arteta’s primary centre-backs. He currently possesses the number 12 shirt, wearing it as he won man of the match in the win over Crystal Palace last Friday.

But his preferred shirt is the number 2, having had that printed onto a pair of personalised Nike shoes ahead of the new campaign. Preventing him from taking that shirt when he returned to the Emirates has been Bellerin, though.

Lokonga transfer

AC Milan are reportedly in talks to sign Arsenal midfielder Albert Sambi Lokonga.

The 22-year-old was brought in from native Belgian giants Anderlecht last summer after Gunners boss Mikel Arteta identified his talents and convinced his club to shell out £15million to secure his services.

But Lokonga, who endured a difficult first season in north London, could now leave the Emirates a matter of weeks into his second campaign.

Tuttomercatoweb, via Football Italia, report that Milan have begun negotiations as they target a new midfielder before transfer deadline day on September 1.

Tonali on radar

Arsenal are in talks with AC Milan to sign Sandro Tonali, according to The Guardian.

The 22-year-old midfielder helped Milan win Serie A last season.

He is valued at £50million.

Fee for Pablo Mari revealed

With Pablo Mari on the brink of joining Monza, the price the Serie A newcomers will have to pay to make the move permanent has been revealed.

Mari will join the Italian outfit on a season-long loan, and Fabrizio Romano has revealed that they will have to pay £4.2m at the conclusion of that loan if they want to secure his services on a full time basis.

That figure also depends on whether they manage to stay in the Italian top-tier division.

Arsenal handed potential injury concern

Arsenal look to have a minor injury concern after Ben White was spotted training with a knee brace this week.

Playing at right-back, the former Brighton defender put in a solid display during Friday’s 2-0 opening away day win at Crystal Palace, helping the Gunners seal their first clean sheet of the new season.

Fans will hope the brace was just for precautionary purposes and not down to something more serious, especially given Arsenal face a tricky home clash against Leicester City this weekend.

Man Utd’s Gakpo advantage

Manchester United are ahead of Arsenal in the race to sign PSV Eindhoven winger Cody Gakpo.

The Telegraph says Gakpo is interested in moving to United and joining Erik ten Hag, who is represented by the same agency. He is valued at £35million by the Dutch club and is a target after United stopped chasing Ajax’s Antony.

Bellerin deal ‘complicated and slow’

Hector Bellerin’s chances of leaving Arsenal for Real Betis this summer are fading according to reports in Spain.

AS says the move, which Bellerin has his heart set on after a loan spell in Seville last season, is ‘complicated and slow’ and is now looking ‘increasingly remote’.

Bellerin’s agent was in London this week trying to sort out a way of cancelling his client’s Arsenal contract, but Betis might not even be able to sign him because they are struggling to get under La Liga’s salary cap.

Chelsea ‘pushing’ for Aubameyang

Reports of Chelsea’s interest in Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang had faded of late – but they’re back with a bang now.

Fabrizio Romano reports that Thomas Tuchel is ‘pushing’ with Todd Boehly to sign the former Arsenal captain, who he deems to be the ‘perfect’ striker. They are yet to approach Barcelona, but it could be one to watch.

Arsenal not willing to pay Tielemans fee

Arsenal might hold off signing Youri Tielemans until next summer because the £32million Leicester City are demanding for him is too high.

That’s according to football.london who say the Gunners’ interest is beginning to cool.

Lokonga attracting interest

Albert Sambi Lokonga has emerged as a target for AC Milan.

Lokonga is set to struggle for game-time at Arsenal and reports in Italy claim he is free to leave the Gunners. Milan are his leading suitors, with ‘contacts in progress’ over a move for the San Siro.

Mari flies out for medical

Pablo Mari is reportedly set to fly out to Italy to complete his move to Monza today.

The centre-back has no place in Mikel Arteta’s plans and has been deciding between Monza and Hellas Verona for his next move. It appears that Monza have now won the race, with Gianluca di Marzio reporting he will join the Serie A side on a season-long loan.

It is stated that Mari will take a private jet to Lombardy to undergo a medical on Wednesday afternoon.

Gunners suffer Gakpo blow

Cody Gakpo has offered a fresh hint that he will snub a move to Arsenal and stay at PSV beyond this summer.

“We must first focus on [the second leg against Monaco] and try to make it to the Champions League, then it is more likely that I will stay,” he told ESPN.

“I don’t think I have said anywhere that I am leaving, so there is definitely a chance that I will stay. I’m open for a cup of coffee with the management – or coffee for them and water for me. We’ll see how it goes.”

Mari decision awaited

Arsenal are reportedly awaiting Pablo Mari’s final decision over his next club before sanctioning a sale.

The defender has no place in Mikel Arteta’s plans and spent last season on loan at Udinese. He is being chased by Serie A rivals Hellas Verona and Monza, with both teams keen to sign him.

According to Caught Offside, talks are progressing better with Monza, with Arsenal now waiting for Mari to make his final decision.

Meetings held to terminate Bellerin deal

Arsenal have reportedly held meetings with Hector Bellerin’s agent over the possibility of terminating his contract.

Bellerin is keen to leave the Gunners and return to Real Betis, where he spent last season on loan. According to Caught Offside, returning to the La Liga side is his ‘priority’.

To force through a move, Bellerin’s agent has now held talks with Arsenal chiefs over terminating his current deal.

Gunners sent Bowen warning

Arsenal have been warned that a deal for Jarrod Bowen will prove to be difficult to facilitate.

The Gunners are in the market for a new winger after missing out on Raphinha to Barcelona. Bowen is thought to be on their shopping list following an impressive couple of seasons at West Ham.

According to Caught Offside, Arsenal are yet to submit an official bid, with the Hammers thought to be unwilling to let him go. And that will mean that negotiations over any deal will not be ‘easy’.

Ramsey’s reasons for Nice move

Aaron Ramsey has revealed that he spoke to former team-mates at Arsenal before opting to join Nice.

“I have spoken to a lot of players from my days at Arsenal. I played with many French players who have experienced the French league so I spoke to a lot of them in the last few weeks,” he said.

“They told me a lot about this league, how good and technical it is. They told me about the history of the club and I was very interested in that. I know some great players have played here in the past and I hope to be a part of a very successful period for the club.”

Chelsea enter Casadei race

Chelsea have reportedly launched a bid to sign Arsenal target Cesare Casadei.

The Gunners have been eyeing a move for the Inter Milan star as they search for midfield recruits. But the Blues are looking to trump them in the race as Thomas Tuchel also looks for new recruits.

According to Tuttosport, Chelsea are preparing a £12million bid for Casadei, with Inter ready to sell the Italian.

Sanchez joins Marseille

Former Arsenal star Alexis Sanchez is set to complete a move to Marseille after agreeing terms with the Ligue 1 side.

Sanchez has spent the past few years at Inter Milan, but has now left the Serie A giants. Instead, he has opted to move to the south of France, with Marseille confirming a deal had been reached late on Tuesday.

“Olympique de Marseille and Alexis Sánchez have agreed on the arrival of the player in the Marseille city via an agreement in principle. The Chilean international with 143 caps who has won 17 trophies in his career will commit in the next few hours subject to the success of his medical examination,” a club statement said.

Arsenal receive triple injury boost

Arsenal have been handed a triple injury boost ahead of their Premier League clash with Leicester at the weekend.

Mikel Arteta’s side began brightly with a 2-0 win away at London rivals Crystal Palace in the curtain-raiser last Friday night. They achieved the impressive win despite missing a clutch of senior stars. But in a major boost ahead of their first home game of the campaign, the trio of Takehiro Tomiyasu, Fabio Vieira and Emile Smith Rowe have all resumed training.

Bellerin talks continue

The Spaniard’s representatives were present at London Colney today to try and broker some kind of deal that would see the Gunners sanction his departure as soon as possible, potentially without receiving any transfer fee.

Edu’s reaction to Aubameyang exit spoke volumes

When Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang travelled to Barcelona on transfer deadline day back in January – before his Arsenal exit had been agreed – the Gunners’ sporting director Edu was left stunned.

Aubameyang was desperate to quit the Emirates after being frozen out by Mikel Arteta following a string of disciplinary issues. Those issues had also seen Aubameyang stripped of the Arsenal captaincy shortly before his first-team exile.

Ramsdale explains heated “arguments” with Xhaka

Arsenal goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale claims Granit Xhaka brings the out the best in him with their slanging matches on the pitch.

The England shot-stopper and fiery Swiss midfielder are two of the most voluble Gunners, and their vocal presence sometimes spills over into arguments. But Ramsdale insists the spats are always put to one side in the dressing room and he said of Xhaka: “He’s integral to our group, playing or not playing.”

Arteta had file of Aubameyang “misdemeanours” before Arsenal exit

Mikel Arteta kept a detailed file containing all the problems Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang had caused during his time at Arsenal in case he needed to justify a decision to reprimand him.

Aubameyang was stripped of the captaincy in December 2021 and forced to train by himself after returning late from an agreed trip to France to see his mother. The incident was the final straw for Arteta, who had agreed to a strict set of rules when making Aubameyang back in November 2019.

Aubameyang was left out of matchday squads and subsequently frozen out of first-team training sessions at London Colney as punishment. Arteta eventually allowed the Gabon international, who was reportedly being paid £350,000-a-week, to leave for Barcelona on a free transfer in January – but only after the club had negotiated a tricky situation.
