It’s been over a year and a half since USA was crowned champions at the 2021 World Juniors, but here at the unusual date of August, the country begins its quest to repeat as gold medalists.

It’s a unique time of year for the tournament to be played, but that is due to the fact that the original tournament was canceled after three days of competition due to COVID-19. The IIHF elected to restart the annual event for August and now, instead of taking a break from their regular seasons, these teenagers are tasked with playing some of their first competitive hockey in months.
“I think the challenge is getting the guys to play good, detailed playoff hockey,” U.S. head coach Nate Leaman said before the game. “Normally for this tournament, guys are in the midway part of their season so they’re already geared up, they’re in shape. There’s a lot more detail to their game. We’ve got to get there. We’ve got to get there quick.”
USA enters the game holding 11 wins and one OT loss over Germany all-time at the World Juniors. The Americans are aiming for their seventh consecutive win against the Germans.

Matt Knies tracker
Each game, we will highlight one player on Team USA to follow along with during the matchup.
Up first is Matt Knies, a forward from the University of Minnesota. He is a 2021 second-round draft pick by the Maple Leafs who skated for the United States at the 2022 Winter Olympics, recording a goal and an assist in four games with the club.
He’s a skilled winger who is a big body (6-3, 205), constantly using his frame to create space and separation from opponents. The Golden Gopher should be one of the top forwards for Team USA in Edmonton.
