Andy Murray revealed that beating Novak Djokovic in the 2015 National Bank Open final was his favorite victory at the Canadian Masters. Murray, 35, is a three-time champion in Canada, having won the National Bank Open two times in Montreal and once in Toronto.

Murray captured his first title at the National Bank Open in 2009, when he defeated Juan Martin del Potro in the Montreal final. The following year when the National Bank Open was held in Toronto, Murray defended his crown after beating Roger Federer in the final.

In 2015, Murray captured his third National Bank Open title after beating Djokovic 6-4 4-6 6-3. Murray was asked to pick the favorite from his three victories in Canada. “That’s a difficult one really. I probably – the year I beat Novak in the final here.

I’d lost to him quite a few times in a row in the buildup to that match. And it was an important match for me that one. It was brutal heat as well that day,” Murray said, via Sportskeeda. “I think we almost played three hours for three sets but yeah that was a nice one.”

Murray on the absences of Djokovic, Rafael Nadal

This year’s National Bank Open is not featuring Djokovic, Nadal and Roger Federer. Djokovic was denied entry into Canada because of his vaccination, while an abdominal injury forced Nadal to pull out of the tournament.

On the other side, Federer hasn’t played any tournaments in 2022 due to knee issues. “Yeah I mean, look that’s happened in quite a few tournaments this year, you know, when Rafa and Novak have not been around the draws can open up and I would say that the group of players just beneath those two maybe haven’t been as consistent with their results, so draws, like I said, can open up and there’s opportunity for players to have a deep run here,” Murray said. Murray was drawn to face Taylor Fritz in the first round.
