Nick Kyrgios was all happy after clinching a double-triumph in Washington as he is now hoping to continue his strong form in the rest of the North American hard court swing. Sunday is reserved for finals in tennis and Kyrgios was twice on the court this past Sunday.
In the Washington singles final, Kyrgios defeated Yoshihito Nishioka 6-4 6-3 to win his first ATP singles title since 2019. An hour after winning the Washington singles title, Kyrgios returned to the court as he and his partner Jack Sock defeated Ivan Dodig and Austin Krajicek 7-5 6-4 to win the doubles title in DC.
Kyrgios was the first player in the tournament history to win the singles and doubles titles in the same year. “I’m really happy to take home both titles,” Kyrgios said following his double victory in Washington, per the ATP website.
“Hopefully I can keep this momentum going.”
Sock on winning the Washington doubles title with Kyrgios
Kyrgios is primarily focused on singles but he made sure to give his best whenever he was playing alongside Sock.
After the doubles final, Sock gave credit to Kyrgios for giving his best every time they stepped out onto the court. “We knew it was always going to be a tough match against you guys,” Sock said, addressing Dodig and Krajicek.
“We had to definitely play our best today to have a chance. I’ve got to thank Nick for sticking it out. Most guys wouldn’t do that. It’s fairly h*t and humid here in D.C. so I wasn’t expecting him to be too fresh for the doubles.
He came out with full energy every time, which says a lot about what [he’s] doing on and off the court, prepping.” Kyrgios and Sock now have two doubles titles together. In 2018, Kyrgios and Sock won it all on the clay courts of Lyon.
Kyrgios and Sock have proved that they can play well together and it remains to be seen if they decide to team up again before the season ends.
