Gennadiy Golovkin needs a knockout to beat Canelo Alvarez says Shawn Porter

By Jim Calfa: Shawn Porter feels that Gennadiy Golovkin has lost his mobility due to his increasing age and will need a knockout of Canelo Alvarez on September 17th for him to win.

Porter says Golovkin (42-1-1, 37 KOs) from 2010 to 2012 would have a shot outboxing Canelo, but not at this time with him 40 years old.

Whether Golovkin can score a knockout of Canelo will depend on if he can “dig deep” and go for it with a flurry of shots.

What hasn’t worked for Golovkin in the past is his habit of putting maximum power on single shots, which Canelo often ducked or dodged with his head movement.

Dmitry Bivol showed how you could hit Canelo last May by him unloading on the Mexican star with sustained combinations. While Canelo would avoid the first punch or two, Bivol got through by throwing them in bunches.

“You got to deal with the now. While I was feeling that the’s gotten older and I don’t see him moving the same. All those types of things, I’m looking at it now like GGG has had a lot of time to download a lot of data, especially with Canelo’s last performance; there’s even more data for you to download and be prepared to do some different things in the ring,” said Shawn Porter to Fight Hub TV.

“He’s [Golovkin] rested, he’s fresh; at least that’s what I would believe about a guy like GGG at this point,” said Porter.

“I don’t think his [Canelo] defeat hasn’t made him feel like he’s not who he is. So, I think he’s really prepared to go into the ring to show the world who he is. What does that mean? Stalk, seek & destroy. GGG isn’t going to go away quietly. It’s going to be exciting, and I don’t which way it’s going to go.

“Let’s be honest; I don’t think he [Golovkin] can move the way he used to, and when I say ‘used to,’ I’m talking 2010, 2012 when GGG could move and box. He can’t do that anymore.

“What that means is it’s unlikely you’re going to outbox Canelo. So it’s going to be that bang-him-out game that it was before, but he’s just got to be smart about it and pick his points where he wants to dig deep. Does that lead to a knockout for him? It’s possible,” said Porter.
