By Jim Calfa: Canelo Alvarez posted footage of his training camp on Monday in preparing for his trilogy fight against Gennadiy Golovkin on September 17th.
What we see from the workout is Canelo (57-2-2, 39 KOs) is putting effort into his combination punching and mobility. These were two areas that his last opponent, WBA light heavyweight champion Dmitriy Bivol, took advantage of on May 7th.
Canelo’s stamina was also a major obstacle preventing him from defeating Bivol. If Canelo doesn’t improve his conditioning, he’ll fade after three or four rounds against Golovkin (42-1-1, 37 KOs) and find himself in a real dog fight.
Some of Canelo’s fans have lost respect for him after he decided to forgo taking the rematch with Bivol and instead fight the 40-year-old Golovkin.
That move by Canelo made it appear that he’s running from Bivol, preferring instead to fight the washed-up Golovkin, who has looked poor in his last four fights.
Golovkin is going to need to make changes to the normal fighting style that he used in his previous two fights against Canelo. GGG’s habit of loading up on single shots and jabbing won’t get the job done against Canelo.
What Golovkin must do is try and barrow the fighting style of Bivol by throwing combinations and not putting everything into each shot. Golovkin needs volume to have a shot at beating Canelo because he must outwork him.
It would also be a good idea for Golovkin to tighten up his defense, especially when it comes to blocking shots to the body. Ryota Murata and Sergiy Derevyanchenko both took advantage of Golovkin’s leaky defense downstairs by hitting him with body shots
Murata and Derevyanchenko hurt Golovkin to the body, and he looked tired and old. Going on the attack will help Golovkin because Canelo isn’t as dangerous when he’s being backed up by his opponents.
If Canelo wins this fight, it’s important that he take the rematch with Bivol right away. The boxing public is already unhappy with Canelo for swerving David Benavidez for the last three years.
If Canelo avoids Bivol, it’s going to signal to his boxing fans that he’s afraid of him and doesn’t feel he can win the rematch.
