The Boys Amateur Championship, schedule

The tournament, born in 1921, will begin with the qualification on 36 medal holes, 18 per day, in which the 252 participants will alternate on the two tracks of the Panmure Golf Club and the Monifieth Golf Links.

Then after a day of rest, the top 64 finishers will enter the match play, all on 18 holes, with the exception of the final on 36, which will take place on the famous Carnoustie course, eight times home to The Open. The winner will enter the field of The Amateur Championship by right.

No Italian has ever won the tournament, but last year Riccardo Fantinelli finished second, passed on the first play-off hole by Englishman Jack Bigham. Two other Azzurri played in the final lost by both: in 1973 Stefano Betti (5/3 by the Scottish David Robertson) and in 1998 Stefano Reale (1 up by the Scottish Steven O’Hara).

Past winners include Spaniards Jose Maria Olazabal (1983), Sergio Garcia (1997) and Adrian Otaegui (2010), Englishmen Matt Fitzpatrick (2012), David Howell (1993) and Tom Lewis (2009) and Scotsman Ewen Ferguson (2013). The Boys Amateur Championship was first disputed at Royal Ascot in 1921.

In 1921 boys had to be under-16 but this was raised to under-17 in 1922 and to under-18 in 1923, which is the age limit that has been retained since. The venue for the competition has been played at many golf courses throughout the United Kingdom and has frequented several golf courses on more than one occasion. Notably the first two completion were both played at Royal Ascot.
