Ian Wright responded in the perfect way to Alan Sugar’s latest jibe by wearing a pink shirt on Saturday night’s Match of the Day.
Sugar questioned Arsenal’s pink third kit during their 2-0 win against Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park on Friday evening. “Pink shirts!” tweeted the Apprentice star. “I wonder if Ian Wright would have played in a pink shirt.” He also tagged Wright in the comment.
Sugar was slammed for his tweet. It came less than a month after he questioned the BBC’s coverage of the Women’s Euros for not having a male commentator in some games. He then dragged Wright into the row for being one of the BBC’s pundits.
Wright was keen to put Sugar in his place and did so by wearing a bright pink shirt on Match of the Day. When the Arsenal legend’s attire was brought up on the show by host Gary Lineker and fellow pundit Alan Shearer, he said: “Real men can wear pink.”
Wright accused Sugar of “foolishness” following his comments about the BBC’s coverage of the Women’s Euros. The former Tottenham chairman suggested Wright was part of the BBC’s punditry team for the 8-0 win against Norway because of his tweet, despite the ex-striker often appearing on the BBC’s and ITV’s coverage of women’s football.
“I was pleased to see my old mate Ian Wright was given the opportunity to commentate on the ladies game last night,” tweeted Sugar. “I wonder if my earlier tweet below touched a nerve. Of course BBC sport will say not at all, Ian was already lined up for it.”

Wright then responded to Sugar’s tweet by posting a video on social media. “Everybody please, stop sending me the tweet, I was taking my daughter to her singing lessons,” said Wright. “The tweet is blowing up and doing my head in. I can’t believe it.
“Alan, the thing is, my friend. Rather than saying, ‘I got it wrong, lots of men are working at all levels of the tournament’ – you doubled down on some complete f***ing foolishness.
“You actually, in your mind, you actually thought that after you sent that tweet that the BBC phoned me up, never mind we’ve been ready and booked for a year, you think they called me up and said, ‘Ian, you’ve got to get back from Germany ASAP, Alan Sugar has tweeted, we can’t upset him, we need to get you on.
“You genuinely believe that happened, because I need to know, because that says to me my god, your ego is totally out of control. Where’s the people around you to hug you bro? You need some hugs man. Coming on Twitter for attention. It’s laughable.
“Stop doing it to yourself. Thank you for that tweet, because if it wasn’t for you I would have missed one of the greatest England games that has ever been played. In all seriousness, I’m glad you’re watching. Only thing you can find fault with doesn’t even exist.”
Sugar later replied: “Totally misunderstood my point and now thanks to you taking things the wrong way a media circus has erupted. Never mind you are good bloke.”
