Frank Lampard is reportedly closing in on a deal for a former Everton favourite…

What’s the word?

According to The Athletic, Everton have been in talks with Paris Saint-Germain over a move for Idrissa Gana Gueye and a confirmed move is now ‘imminent‘.

With just one year left on his £99k-per-week deal, the Toffees are considering offering the 94-cap ace a two-year deal.

Lampard wishes to add extra depth to his engine room, wanting another midfielder even after they hopefully capture the Senegalese maestro.

Perfect signing

Everton’s fragilities last season certainly lay in midfield, and whether Rafa Benitez or Lampard opted for a midfield three or two, they always seemed overran.

Adding some much-needed legs will be a huge boost in ensuring the Toffees are not once again dragged into a relegation scrap. He would be “perfect” for Everton, as Dominic Booth suggested he would have been for Manchester United.

Having played 108 games for Everton and being largely considered one of their better players, he left the club on very good terms, having earned them a huge fee when the Parisian club came calling.

Lampard’s desperation for midfielders is further outlined in his pursuit of LOSC Lille midfielder Amadou Onana, who he looks to snatch from under West Ham United’s noses.

Last season Gueye featured 33 times across both Ligue 1 and the Champions League. Since leaving Goodison Park he has earned experience very few inside the current changing room currently possess.

He also chipped in with four goal contributions, more than Allan and Andre Gomes, and the same amount as Alex Iwobi.

A “monster” of a midfielder, he ranked in the top 6% for pressures per 90. Some much-needed energy alongside Alex Iwobi would swiftly produce one of the most exceptionally fit midfielders in the Premier League.

Firstly, where did Everton finish in the Premier League?

However, it seems that at PSG, he has honed his passing skills and would return as a much greater footballer than he left. He averaged a remarkable pass completion percentage of 92.7% last season, combined with 4.19 progressive passes per 90.

Everton fans will rejoice at this transfer update, as they get to see a fan favourite return with vast experience who will instantly improve their midfield. This would certainly be a perfect signing from Kevin Thelwell as they aim to avoid another dreaded relegation battle.
