Andy Murray weighs in on his US Open seeding chances after early Washington loss

World No. 50 Andy Murray acknowledged he could still be a seeded player at the US Open but admits making a deep run in Montreal or Cincinnati doesn’t really seem realistic after another disappointing loss. On Monday, Murray suffered a 7-6 (8) 4-6 6-1 loss to Mikael Ymer in the Washington first round.

Murray came to Washington determined to make a deep run and get closer to returning into the top-30 ahead of the US Open. Murray making a deep Montreal or Cincinnati maybe doesn’t seem realistic now but the Briton is still confident he can do it.

“It’s still possible to do it (getting seeded at the US Open). I would just need to have a good run in Canada or Cincinnati really. It’s pretty straightforward. If I was to make a quarterfinal or a semifinal there, which right now doesn’t seem — after a loss like that doesn’t seem realistic.

But I do feel like if I play very well that I could do that. But, yeah, I’ll need to certainly play better than I did today.”

Murray clearly disappointed after losing early in Washington

Murray received a pretty favorable first round matchup in Washington but failed to capitalize.

Had Murray beaten Ymer, he would have faced Aslan Karatsev in the last-16. Karatsev has been struggling with his game in recent months and that would have been another favorable matchup for Murray. “Right now I’m not seeing lots of positives.

I arrived here early to try and prepare as best as I could to give myself a chance to play well. Obviously I feel like I could have done better,” Murray said. The Montreal Masters kicks off next week and Murray is hoping to bounce back there.

“The only positive is now that I get more time to prepare for the tournament in Canada,” Murray said. “I guess if I can address sort of the physical issue I’ve had the last couple of tournaments, that would be a positive thing. I obviously need to address that now. The conditions are difficult also in Canada, Cincinnati and New York.”
