Jannik Sinner after the Umag victory: “What difficult times!”

Jannik Sinner wins the 2022 ATP Umag final by beating Carlos Alcaraz in comeback and legitimizes the status of star in the world of tennis. It is Jannik’s second win over Carlos in a few weeks, this one on clay after his grassy success at Wimbledon.

He was a Sinner who gave great signs of growth, in the service, in the shots and in the personality given the reaction after a heart-stopping first set. Under 1-0 and 0-40 in the second set many would have given up but Jannik reacted in a frightening way by giving only one game in the rest of the match to a Carlos in difficulty.

Sinner has proven he can compete on any surface and today he beat one of the strongest tennis players in the world, number 4 on the Tour. For the Italian this is the first success in his career on a Top 5. And to say that the situation in the first set seemed very complicated indeed.

Sinner played well from the start, but Alcaraz took it all and with a splendid tiebreak won the first set. The challenge seemed to have taken a very specific direction, but then things changed and Jannik gained the confidence to destroy the opponent’s certainties and bring home the victory.

Sinner and Alcaraz challenged each other three times and on three different surfaces in the major circuit, on dirt and grass Jannik won while the Spaniard won only on the cement of Bercy.

Sinner’s words during the award ceremony

During the award ceremony by the Croatian organizers, the Italian number one made interesting statements and spoke thus about the match: “Well, good evening everyone, first of all Carlos, every week that passes you do nothing but improve, we have given life to a great match.

Congratulations to your team, thank you to my team, in this 2022 we have had unlucky moments and I thank you for being close to me. I hope to do well now in the American season, I want to thank everyone, from the direction of the tournament to the ball boys.

When they arrived on Wednesday I felt a lot of cheering, I’m very happy to have won and I think we all won together, thanks to everyone.”
