England players grate crash Sarina Wiegman’s press conference celebrating Euro 2022 win

Sarina Wiegman was addressing the media in her post-match conference after her England side beat Germany in the Euro 2022 when players suddenly started spilling out of the door to her right.

Led by Lucy Bronze, the Lionesses squad danced their way into the press conference room shouting at the top of their voices: ‘Football’s coming home!’

The whole team did a lap of the room, with goalkeeper Mary Earps even clambering on top of the desk, quickly followed by Bronze. The players then danced their way back out of the room in an incredible display of celebration, leaving a smiling Wiegman to pick up a bottle that had been knocked clean off and then attempt to get back to the task at hand.

This group of players is the first senior England team to win a major international trophy since 1966 and the first women’s side ever to lay their hands on major silverware.

The Lionesses had largely cruised through the tournament to reach a first final since 2009. They finished the group stage with maximum points, scoring 14 goals in the process and not conceding, before overcoming a much tougher task against Spain and then battering Sweden.

The final against Germany was a re-match of the 2009 showpiece, but there was to be no repeat of the one-sided affair that saw the Germans win 6-2 on that occasion.

England scored first through Ella Toone, one of the new stars that have captured the imagination of the country this summer. That was cancelled out by Lina Magull as Germany forced extra-time, before Chloe Kelly wrote her name into English football history with the close-range winner.
