LAFC have loaned midfielder Francisco Ginella to Uruguayan top-flight side Nacional on a 12-month contract that carries into the summer of 2023.

Ginella arrived at LAFC in December 2019 as a U22 Initiative player, joining Uruguayan side Montevideo Wanderers. He departs after recording one goal and six assists across 54 regular-season appearances in the last two and a half seasons.

“Francisco is a young player with a bright career ahead of him, and we are grateful for his contributions to LAFC’s success since his arrival,” LAFC co-president & general manager John Thorrington said in a release. “This move provides a great opportunity to play important minutes in a strong league in his home country.”

As Ginella leaves for Nacional, head coach Steve Cherundolo is expected to keep depending on Ilie Sanchez, Kellyn Acosta and Jose Cifuentes as first-choice midfielders. The team currently leads the Western Conference with 42 points in 20 games and a record of 13W-4L-3D.

LAFC returns to action on Saturday when visiting Sporting Kansas City at Children’s Mercy Park.
