By Allan Fox: Ryan Garcia says his decision to move up to 140 won’t create an obstacle to making the fight with Gervonta ‘Tank’ Davis in December. We’ll soon see whether Tank is agreeable to being dictated to by Ryan with him saying their fight must take place at 140.
If Tank wants to get the Ryan fight over with once and for all, he’ll agree to the 140-lb weight and trounce the inexperienced social media star. That said, it’s not a good sign that Ryan isn’t willing to fight Tank in his natural weight class.
You can argue that if Tank agrees to this, it could be just the beginning of the hassles involved in making a fight with Ryan.
At some point, Tank and his promoters at Mayweather Promotions might decide to bail and tell the pushy Ryan to go kick rocks.
If Ryan wants to play power play, he needs to continue fighting fringe-level fighters like he’s been doing his entire career. Despite having a ton of hype about him, Ryan has yet to fight a top five contender during his six-year professional career.
While some boxing fans see Ryan as the replacement for Canelo Alvarez in Golden Boy Promotions stable, the Mexican star had already won two 154-lb world titles by the time he was the same age.
Ryan (23-0, 19 KOs) points out that Tank (27-0, 25 KOs) has had problems in the past making weights, so he feels that he’ll not create a fuss about being asked to come up to 140 to make the mega-fight between them happen.
Tank came in two pounds overweight for his super featherweight title bout against Francisco Fonseca in August 2017. Since that fight, Tank hasn’t had any issues with his weight.
If Tank wants the fight and the big payday that comes with it badly enough, he’ll agree to come up to 140 to face the unbeaten Ryan. Last Saturday night, Ryan announced after his victory over Javier Fortuna that he won’t be returning to the 135-lb division.
The truth is that Ryan hasn’t fought at 135 since his fight last year against Luke Campbell in January 2021. Since that fight, Ryan’s previous two bouts have been at 140 against fringe Emmanuel Tagoe and Fortuna.
“No, I think he’ll be more comfortable at 140. He’s had problems making weight in the past. Any jump in weight will probably help him if anything,” said Ryan Garcia when asked if his decision to move up to 140 will create an obstacle in making the fight with Gervonta ‘Tank’ Davis.
I think Tank Davis might have a problem with the idea of Ryan Garcia telling him at what weight the fight needs to take place.
It’s easy to see the next move by Ryan being a situation where he tells Tank where and when their fight will take place. Tank can avoid all that if he rejects the idea of fighting at 140 and is firm with the social media star that he needs to return to the 135-lb division if he wants to fight him.
“He’s doing what he’s supposed to do. In the last round, he hit him with a good body shot, but I need to see more,” said Devin Haney to DAZN Boxing about Ryan Garcia.
“I thought Fortuna was a little bit over the edge. I thought Ryan would get him out earlier, but Fortuna is a crafty opponent, and he’s showing it,” said Haney.
“Of course, I want to fight the best fighters in the world,” said Haney when asked if he would be interested in fighting Ryan Garcia next if his rematch with George Kambosos Jr fails to happen.
