Boris Becker reportedly got a new job as a sports science teacher for inmates at HMP Huntercombe, the prison where he serves his sentence. Becker was sentenced to two and a half years in prison in April after attempting to conceal assets worth more than £2.5 million in order to avoid paying debts.
“You would normally serve years before getting a job as a classroom assistant as it is seen as a privilege. But Becker has been given the job within weeks of being sentenced. There is a lot of resentment about it and the families of some prisoners have written letters of complaint,” one inside source said per The Sun.
However, according to the Prison Service, it’s not a case of preferential treatment. “It’s untrue to suggest any preferential treatment was given. Offenders are able to access a variety of work and education opportunities while in prison,” said a spokesman of the Prison Service.

HMP Huntercopmbe is a jail for convicted foreign nationals only, which suggests that the German will be deported after serving his sentence. Becker has been living in the United Kingdom since 2012 but he doesn’t have a British citizenship.
“Boris Becker was transferred to Huntercombe prison today. It is a category C prison, which means it has a low security level,” Becker’s lawyer reportedly said. When questioned about his old coach, Novak Djokovic, who won six Grand Slam titles with Becker, said he was heartbroken.
“Just heartbroken, I mean, for him. He’s a friend, long-time friend, a coach for three, four years, someone I consider close in my life and has contributed a lot to my success in my career. I was just heartbroken,” Djokovic said after being asked about Becker’s imprisonment.
